Connected laboratory operations

Know where critical equipment and samples are—when it matters

LIMS.Science connects BLE beacons, RFID tags, readers and gateways with laboratory workflows to show current or last-known location, custody and movement history in one operational view.

Physical sensing

Two technologies, one traceable workflow

Choose the sensing method that matches the object, movement and control point—then connect each valid event to the LIMS.

BLE

BLE for live zone visibility

Battery-powered beacons broadcast an identifier. Gateways detect presence and signal strength, making BLE well suited to mobile equipment, carts and transport containers moving through monitored zones.

Precision depends on gateway density, the radio environment, tag placement and calibration.

RFID

RFID for verified control points

Passive tags are read at defined points such as reception, benches, cold storage and dispatch. RFID suits high-volume sample flows, doorway transitions, inventory checks and custody handoffs.

Read performance depends on tag type, nearby materials, antenna placement and the physical workflow.

BLE + RFID

A practical hybrid

Use BLE for ongoing zone presence and RFID for verified handoffs. Retain barcode scanning where it provides the simplest or most resilient fallback.

From physical detection to a governed LIMS event

The integration layer validates, de-duplicates and timestamps each event before LIMS.Science links it to the correct equipment, sample, batch, custody step or work order.

Live visibility without false certainty

The operational view updates whenever a valid detection or scan arrives and keeps the quality of each signal visible.

Implementation

From site survey to sustained operation

1. Scope and survey

Identify critical objects, zones, decisions, materials, interference, power, network coverage and physical handoffs.

2. Design

Select BLE, RFID or a hybrid; define tags, readers, antennas, fallback methods and measurable acceptance criteria.

3. Connect and commission

Link identifiers to master data, event rules, permissions, retention and APIs, then verify the controlled scope with users.

4. Scale and improve

Expand in stages while monitoring coverage, device health, adoption and alert quality.

Operational outcomes

  • Spend less time searching
  • Reduce unclear handoffs
  • Respond faster to exceptions
  • Improve equipment utilisation
  • Build an evidence-based movement history
